About this project

Pitch

Rotli is a local-first notes workspace for Mac and the web. Every note is a plain Markdown file in one folder you choose, so your notes open in any editor, back up however you like, and outlive the app. Write Press ⌥Space from anywhere and start typing. Markdown renders as you go: tasks, choices, tables, diagrams and math. Aa shows the plain Markdown underneath whenever you want it. [[Wikilinks]] and ⌘K search reach across the whole vault. Keep Your folder is the product. Main and named views arrange notes without copying them, and an optional Librarian files, tags and links your notes without rewriting what you wrote. Ask Chat answers from your own notes, with a model running on your Mac or the AI tools you already use. Conversations are kept as notes. Secure notes never reach a remote model, and a locked note can't be edited by any AI. Private by design No account, no tracking, no analytics, no ads. Nothing to sign up for. Everywhere you work The full app runs on Apple silicon Macs. Rotli Web gives you the same editor in Chrome, Edge and Arc, working in a real folder on your computer. A small Helper adds Firefox, Zen and Brave. Free and open source under the MIT license. Seven theme families, each with a light and dark mode, and a quokka companion if you want one. Rotli is named after Rottnest, the island quokkas call home.

Why we're launching this

From the team
I built Rotli because I wanted a notes app that felt calm and didn't own my notes. Obsidian I felt and feel just as a really bad user experience. So many simple things made way more complicated then they have to be. I also wanted something with AI built into it that didnt costs an arm and a leg so found a way to build subscriptions you already have into it.
