About this project

Pitch

The Problem: Passive Reading is Fake Productivity We’ve all been there, staring at textbooks, highlighting PDFs, or scrolling through endless documentation, convincing ourselves we’re studying. But cognitive science proves that passive consumption doesn't stick. True mastery requires active recall, dual coding, and spatial reasoning. You learn best when you map concepts visually and have to explain them out loud. The ultimate learning environment is standing at a physical whiteboard with an expert tutor who looks at your sketches, challenges your logic, and forces you to think. But nobody has a private professor on call 24/7. That is why I built Tablo. What is Tablo? Tablo (tablo.study) is an open-source, visual "Cognitive Operating System" and Socratic study tool. It replaces the traditional, boring AI text box with an infinite, multi-modal canvas. Instead of just typing back and forth, Tablo uses real-time audio and computer vision to look at what you draw, listen to what you say, and guide you through complex subjects by asking the right questions rather than just handing you the answers. Key Features Multimodal Whiteboard Integration: Built on an infinite canvas, Tablo doesn't just read plain text. It tracks your canvas state, understands your handwritten notes, interprets your layout boxes, and follows the directional arrows in your architecture or workflow diagrams. Real-Time Socratic Voice: No more typing and waiting. Tablo features an ultra-low latency audio streaming architecture. You can talk to your board naturally while you sketch. The AI listens, processes your voice and canvas layout simultaneously, and speaks back to you with a warm, conversational human cadence. Strict Socratic Pedagogy: Tablo is designed to prevent lazy learning. If you ask it to give you the answer to a coding bug, a math equation, or a complex concept, it won't just output the solution. It isolates your underlying misconception and formulates a tailored guiding question to make you bridge the gap. Contextual Document RAG: Drop your dense PDFs, textbook chapters, or reference materials directly onto the board. Tablo ingests this unstructured data, allowing the AI tutor to cross-reference your sketches directly with your source materials in real time. Built for Active Recall: Move from passive reading to permanent memory. By forcing you to draw out concepts, explain your logic out loud, and answer targeted micro-questions, Tablo simulates a high-intensity study session that actually builds deep understanding. Why Open Source? Education and advanced AI tools shouldn't be locked behind opaque, expensive walls. Tablo is fully open-source because I believe students and developers should have absolute control over their learning environment. You can audit the prompts, customize the Socratic guardrails, and adapt the workspace to fit exactly how your brain works. Check out the live platform at tablo.study, spin up a board, and let me know your honest thoughts. I’m looking for early adopters, students, and contributors to help push the boundaries of what a visual study tool can do!

Why we're launching this

From the team
I built Tablo because passive learning is broken. True mastery requires active recall and spatial reasoning. I wanted an AI companion that doesn't just hand over answers, but looks at my handwritten sketches, understands my diagrams, and guides me through tight Socratic dialogue. I’m launching now after an intense development sprint to get our real-time WebRTC voice and multimodal vision stack running flawlessly. I need your brutal feedback to see if this changes how you study.
